The Hoptown Hoppers defeat the Owensboro Oilers, 13-0
(From Hopkinsville) Four Hoptown pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout Sunday, and the homestanding Hoppers pounded out 15 hits for the second time in as many games to notch the 13-0 win over the Owensboro Oilers.
Starting pitcher Chase Maddux (1-0), a UNLV sophomore and the son of Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux, struck out three and walked one and gave up the lone Oilers hit in six innings of work to earn the win. Relievers Nick Coffman, Riley Richert and Gavin Alvarez each threw an inning of no-hit ball, with Richert claiming two strikeouts and Alvarez throwing one.
The Hoptown offensive onslaught continued for the Hoppers, with Andrew Gross launching two two-run homers to bolster the hometown cause. Gross finished with a 3-for-5 day, adding a double, scoring two runs and driving in five. Chase Schmittou went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and a run batted in, while Grant Robbins went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two steals.
Cooper Weatherly went 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Kyle O'Keefe went 2-for-4 with a run. Allonte Wingate had a double, scored three runs and had two RBIs, while Matt Dudas and Hunter Thomas each had a double for the Hoppers.
Starter Isaiah Nelson (0-1) took the loss for Owensboro, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking four in 3 1/3 innings. Aaryn Chandler came on in the fourth inning, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, striking out one and walking one in 3 2/3 innings. Saige Benson didn't record an out in the eighth inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit and walked two, while Matt Walczak closed out the game, allowing no runs on one hit in one inning.
