The Hoptown Hoppers defeated the Owensboro Oilers, 6-5
(From Hopkinsville) Hoptown scored five runs in the third inning of the latter game of the twinbill but had to hold on over the next four innings, as Owensboro made a game of it before the Hoppers prevailed 6-5.
Hoptown again hit the scoreboard first in the first inning when Matt Cogen and Matt Crowder drew one-out walks. A two-out single by Will Olson put the Hoppers ahead 1-0.
Hoptown exploded for five runs in the third when Olson and John Davis led off with singles. Kyle Hubbuch singled in Olson and Matt Dunlevy walked to load the bases. All three batters advanced on a passed ball, scoring Davis, and Ernie de la Trinidad walked to load the bases. Cogen walked in Hubbuch and Crowder singled in Dunlevy and de la Trinidad to give the Hoppers a 6-0 lead.
The Oilers mounted their comeback in the top of the fourth inning when Tyler Tichenor led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Braxton Morris to trim the Hoptown lead to 6-1.
In the top of the fifth, Owensboro plated three more runs when Conner McHugh led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Ben Rhodes then singled him to third and stole second, and McHugh scored on a groundout. Riley Benner singled in Rhodes, went to second on a Nick Bene walk and went to third on a dropped third strike. A single by Mark VanDenlangenberg drove in Benner to further trim the Hoppers' lead to 6-4.
Owensboro got within a run in the sixth inning when Rhodes reached on a two-out bunt single. An errant pickoff throw allowed him to third, and a bad throw from first to third allowed him to score to bring the Oilers within 6-5.
Hoppers pitcher Brady Walsh faced four batters in the seventh to earn his first save.
Hoptown was led at the plate by Olson, who went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Davis, who went 2-for-3 with a run. Crowder went 1-for-1 with two RBIs.
Owensboro was paced by Benner, who went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Rhodes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Bryan Cruse (1-3) started and got the win for Hoptown, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out six and walking four in 4 2/3 innings. Bo Coolen came on in the fifth, allowing one unearned run on two hits, striking out four in 1 1/3 innings, with all of his outs coming through strikeouts. Walsh pitched the seventh inning, allowing one hit.
For Owensboro, Will Birch (0-2) started and got the loss, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one and walking three in one inning. Jared Dwyer came on in the second inning, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking two in one inning. Tyler Solomon entered in the third, allowing five runs on four hits, striking out one and walking three in one-third of an inning. Charlie Dishman then entered the game, allowing no hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Austin Bartle then took the mound in the fourth inning, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking one in one inning. Ben Rhodes closed out the game for the Oilers, allowing no hits, striking out two and walking one in two innings of work.
