The Hoptown Hoppers defeated the Owensboro Oilers, 18-8
(From Hopkinsville) Hoptown scored five runs in the first inning and five in the second to get the 18-8 win over visiting Owensboro.
Owensboro scored in the top of the first inning when Tyler Tichenor led off with a walk, went to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Christian McHatton, with McHatton going to second on the play. An infield single by Hunter Newman moved McHatton to third, and he scored on a single by Austin Edge to put the Oilers ahead 2-0.
Hoptown scored bit in the bottom of the first when Mitch Huckabay and John Beary were hit by a pitch and Brad Sevenish hit into a failed fielder's choice. Huckabay scored when Brandon Powell walked, Beary scored when Seth Larue walked and Sevenish scored when Brandon Boggetto walked. Powell scored on a sacrifice fly and Larue scored a single by Zac Carter to give the Hoppers a 5-2 lead.
Owensboro got a run back in the top of the second when Dalton West led off with a single and went to second on a failed fielder's choice. He went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Tyler Tichenor to cut the Hoptown lead to 5-3.
Hoptown scored five more in the bottom of the second inning when, with two outs, Brad Sevenish was hit by a pitch and Brandon Powell hit a single. They advanced a base on a passed ball, and Sevenish scored on a balk, moving Powell to third. Seth Larue walked and went to second on a passed ball, and Powell and Larue scored on a single by Brandon Boggetto, who went to second on the throw. Boggetto went to third on a single by Trevor Lowe, and Boggetto took home as part of a double-steal. Lowe scored on a single by Zac Carter, giving the Hoppers a 10-3 lead.
Owensboro scored in the top of the third when Hunter Newman led off with a single and went to second when Austin Edge walked. Logan Leverett reached on a fielder's choice, moving Newman to third, and Newman scored on a single by Dalton West. Leverett went to third on a fielder's choice play by Matthew Johnson and scored on a double by Taylor Matthews. Johnson scored on a bunt single by Tyler Tichenor, cutting the Hoppers' lead to 10-6.
The Hoppers added four in the fourth when Brandon Powell led off with a walk and Seth Larue doubled him to third. Brandon Boggetto was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Zac Carter unloaded them with a grand slam home run, giving Hoptown a 14-6 lead.
Owensboro scored again the the top of the fifth inning when Taylor Matthews hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Cameron Wallace to cut the Hoptown lead to 14-7.
Hoptown tacked two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when John Beary and Brad Sevenish each reached on errors and Brandon Powell walked to load the bases. Beary scored on a groundout and Sevenish scored on a sac fly to give the Hoppers a 16-7 lead.
Owensboro put another run on the board inn the top of the eighth inning when Hunter Newman led off with a single, went to second on a groundout, went to third on a single by Stone Osborne and scored on a single by Dalton West to trim the Hoptown lead to 16-8.
Hoptown added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Geordie Carlson led off with a walk and Kyle Barbee singled him to second. Derek Ferch's single loaded the bases, and Carlson scored on a double play. Barbee scored on a double by Henry Rowland to put the Hoppers ahead 18-8.
Hoptown was led at the plate by Zac Carter, who went 3-for-4 with a grand slam home run, a run scored and six runs batted in. Henry Rowland went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Derek Ferch went 2-for-4. Brad Sevenish and Brandon Powell each scored three runs for the Hoppers, and Seth Larue had three runs, two RBIs and a double. Brandon Boggetto had two runs and four RBIs.
For Owensboro, Hunter Newman went 5-for-6 with two doubles and two runs, while Dalton West went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Taylor Matthews went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run and an RBI, Christian McHatton went 2-for-6 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Austin Edge went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Tyler Tichenor went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs for the Oilers.
On the mound, Ryan Mosby got the win, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 13 hits, striking out one and walking two in five innings. Trevor Blocker got the save, allowing one run on six hits, striking out two and walking one in four innings.
For Owensboro, Kyle Schneider took the loss, allowing 10 runs on five hits, striking out one and walking five in two innings. Schneider threw 81 pitches in those two innings. Austin Brunk came on in the third, allowing four runs on two hits, striking out one and walking one in two innings. Shawn Kahre closed out the game for the Oilers, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out two and walking three in four innings.
