The Owensboro Oilers defeated the Hoptown Hoppers, 6-1

(From Owensboro) The Owensboro Oilers returned home and won the Monday night game with the Hoptown Hoppers visiting from Hopkinsville. The final score was 6 to 1.
Hopkinsville scored its run of the game in the top of the 2nd inning. With one out, Nolan Fisher singled. He proceeded to steal second base, and moved to third base on a passed ball. Collin Massanelli was hit by a pitch. A defensive error in trying to prevent Massanelli from stealing second base allowed Fisher to score.
The Oilers scored and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. With one away, Taylor Mathews singled and Tyler Grogg followed by reaching base on an error. Matt Johnson delivered both teammates to the plate with a 2-RBI double. The score remained 2-1 for the home team until Owensboro added one run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Leadoff hitter Grogg again reached base on an error. An elusive attempt to pick Grogg off first base gave him a chance to demonstrate his worrisome speed. He moved all the way to third base. He scored from there on a wild pitch.
The Oilers picked up two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. With two outs, Tyler Tichenor walked and stole second base. Mathews followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved the runners up to third and second bases respectively. Grogg batted in Tichenor and Mathews on a 2-RBI single. At the end of six innings the Oilers led 5 to 1. Owensboro capped the scoring with one more run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Malduino Gonzalez led off with a single. He was sacrificed over to second base. One out later, Grogg reached base safely on a bunt, pushing Gonzalez to third base. A defensive error trying to prevent Grogg from stealing second base brought Gonzalez across.
Oilers starter Shane Weedman got the win for his premium start, working seven innings, giving up just the one run while striking out nine against 2 walks. Jonathan Brinez worked the final two shutout innings in a positive non-save situation. The Hoppers starter Taylor Veillon took the loss.
