The Fulton Railroaders defeated the Tradewater Pirates, 5-4
The Fulton Railroaders get their first win at home at the expense of the Tradewater Pirates. In a hard fought game by both teams, the Railroaders edged out by one run. Fulton took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning when newly signed David Simmons got things going with a single and immediately stole 2nd & 3rd bases. Rob Hogenkamp then hit an RBI single, stole 2nd and score off a hit from Tyler O'Daniel. Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the 4th when Pirates' lead off hitter Eric Herman tripled and scored on a ground out by Derrek Etsell. Tradewater tied the game 2-2 in the 5th scoring one run off a wild pitch and a man on 3rd. The Railroaders regained the lead in the bottom of 6th; David Simmons lead off with a double and scored from another Tyler O'Daniel single. O'Daniel reach 2nd on a wild pitch then scored off a base hit by Brandon Eggenschwiler. The Pirates fought back in the 8th to tied the game again when Derrek Etsell reached base on an error, and JB Sapienza proceeded to slam a 2 RBI homer over right field's 40 ft Little Monster in Fulton. Bottom of the 9th, the Railroaders' O'Daniel lead off with a single and reached 2nd on a sacrifice. Joe Mike then hit a sharp ground ball to the Pirate shortstop who chose to throw towards 3rd and cut down O'Daniel. The ensuing run down between 2nd & 3rd base ended with the go ahead run safe on 3rd. With 2 outs, Alex Azeredo came to the plate and singled to drive in the game winning RBI.
Fulton totaled 11 hits and 2 errors; Tyler O'Daniel went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and scored twice. David Simmons was 2 of 4 and also scored twice. Tradewater put up 10 hits with no errors. With his timely hitting, JB Sapienza lead the Pirates offense with his 1 hit 2 RBI homerun, and Brock Bontrager was 3 of 5 on the evening.
Fulton's starter Steven Dooley pitched a good game through 7 2/3 innings striking out 5 with no walks and giving up 9 hits. With the game tied, Dooley was pulled, Brock Downey came in to finish the 8th inning and he receives the win. Tate Glasscock closed out the top of 9th for Fulton striking out 3 of 4 batters faced, he picks up a save. Newly signed Caoeb Luttrell takes a hard luck loss for Tradewater, pitching only one inning after relieving starter Calyn Young who went for 7 complete innings. The two teams meet again tomorrow in Tradewater for the 2nd of a 3 game series, with the 3rd game in Fulton on Thursday.
